Good news: most Canadian internet plans sold today are more than fast enough for IPTV. What matters most is a stable signal where your TV is.
The numbers
- SD: 5 Mbps per screen
- HD (720p/1080p): 10–15 Mbps per screen
- 4K: 25 Mbps or more per screen
Add those up for every screen watching at the same time, then leave some headroom for everything else in the house.
Stability beats raw speed
A 500 Mbps plan won't help if the Wi-Fi signal in the basement drops every few minutes. Check speed on the TV itself, and use Ethernet or a mesh Wi-Fi system for far-away rooms.
Quick test
- Install a speed-test app on your TV or stick.
- Run it three times at the hours you usually watch.
- If you see big swings, fix Wi-Fi coverage before blaming the stream.
Fibre and cable internet both work well. On DSL or rural fixed wireless, pick HD versions of channels for the smoothest picture.
